Welcome to LFGA – Jason van Zyl

Trails Guide

Jason Van Zyl has joined our team at LFGA and we would like to take this opportunity to welcome him and give our readers a bit of background on our newest trainer.

Jason was raised on the grassy plains of the Free State, South Africa and always had a yearning for wide open spaces. He dabbled with a few different career choices after school, before enrolling at LFGA as a FGASA student in 2006.

Guiding days

Jason excelled on course and quickly got placed on a Big 5 Game Reserve in the Waterberg, Limpopo. Initially involved with the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project as an intern, Jason yearned to use his new-found guiding skills and soon moved over to the Wildlife Services team as a field guide. Again he did very well and was soon promoted through the ranks.

Tracking Skills

Along the way Jason continued his studies and after gaining the necessary hours and experience, he qualified as a FGASA Trails Guide.

Over the next 10 years or so, Jason worked as a guide at some of the top game lodges in South Africa’s premier Big 5 Game Reserves, including Kruger National Park, Welgevonden and Madikwe Game Reserve, thus gaining experience in various provinces and variations of the Savanna Biome.

Along the way higher FGASA levels were achieved and special interests in Dangerous Game, Tracking and Birding were developed. Sensing that he needed management experience to further his career, Jason returned to Mabula in 2016 and took up the esteemed position of Wildlife Services Manager, responsible for the entire Safari Function at this popular destination. Part of his duties there was the training of the ranger team on site.

The final part of completing the loop and returning to LFGA, this time as Trainer, occurred in March 2019.

We are thrilled to have Jason on board and know that our students will benefit greatly from his diverse experience.

Welcome Jason, and all the very best going forward!
